Atalji and Bollywood

Our former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s love for bollywood is as much pronounced as his role in active politics. When a politician of his stature reveals his love for the entertainment industry it instantly creates interest towards an added facet of his enigmatic personality. Trying to know him more through the gateway of his personal periphery itself sounds engaging and fascinating.

It is alleged that he was a great admirer of Dream Girl Hema Malini, to the extent that he watched the film ‘Sita Aur Gita’ for some 25 times. The news seems amusing but considering the theme of the film it clearly reflects upon his positive insight that was constantly looking for the victory of good over evil; it indicates at his hopeful nature that things will be better; it also shows his belief towards striving to bring a change. His choosing Hema Malini over other actresses is not a casual appreciative bent of mind. It undoubtedly reveals his ability to understand her acting talent but also reveals his democratic taste that makes him one with the millions of other Indians coming from almost all sections of the society who unanimously and madly loved Hema Malini. He never signalled any aristocratic likings like Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley. He was all for the commonly praised actors and singers like Hema Malini and Bhupendra Hazarika.

Him being a foodie also indicates at his ability to relish and cherish the joys relating to his afferently efficient system. Films, in this case are no exception, the way he simply enjoyed good food the same way he enjoyed the imitation of life on celluloid. What mattered to him was the ultimate pleasure that he derived out of his involvement in the process.

One famous incident related to Atalji’s love for sweets interestingly tells that once he was too much indulged eating Gulab Jamun at a party. Seeing this, his family and friends got worried for his health and it was Madhuri Dixit who was called immediately to engage him in conversation so that his attention from the sweet was shifted to the then bollywood diva. Her serving as an antidote for sweets has become an anecdote to remember by his fans.

Though he loved watching films, it’s also a fact that Vajpayeeji never liked Bollywood actors joining politics. He twice won in his constituency where MujjafarAli in 1998 and Raj Babbar in 2004 contested against him representing Samajwadi party. At a point, during Bofors controversy he advised Amitabh Bachchan to be away from the political arena. He stated that ” I can be friends with actors but that friendship should not spoil politics”

He was often photographed with Bollywood celebrities on various programmes and had no qualms about being published. From Dev Anand to Lata Mangeshkar and from Amitabh Bacchan to Anil Kapoor all have been fortunate to share space with this legendary statesman. His dialogue delivery is entirely distinguished and no less than any famous filmi dialogues.  He was not a Bollywood celebrity but was celebrated throughout his life span and even afterwards; doesn’t hail from bollywood but has a huge fan following; not an actor but an amazing poet and orator.

An Asmi song Moi rti Jajabor (I am a wanderer) was very close to his heart. When he breathed his last on 16th August  the nation witnessed how greatly the masses were affected. This is because this respected and learned personality was in fact so relatable as a person that he rose to become the real hero of the common man in a pretty unbollywood manner. His heroism and hero worship saga will continue to enlighten  generations to make this world a better place to live in.
