Badhai Ho and breaking old prejudice.

Badhai Ho and breaking old prejudice:

Ayushmann starrer Badhai Ho has definitely broken stereotypes that middle class people set around themselves. There’s always this huge list of do’s and don’ts that keep riddling us, and we have never questioned norms. Events like pregnancy and motherhood are celebrated right after ridiculously expensive weddings, but topics like sex and romance that form the basis of the wedding are shoved up under the sheets. There’s embarrassment to embrace the reality. Badhai Ho revolves around a Delhi couple, who have two children already, with one boy who is of marriageable age, and yet the couple gets pregnant again.

The movie is crafted to break taboos:

We have certain preconceived notions – for example, we have to be married by 20s, have children by 30s, and after that there shouldn’t be any time left for romance, because then it is the kids. Hilarious and impractical, sex and romance, have nothing to do with age, and certainly having children doesn’t mean end of marriage. The movie brings out the judgemental neighbour in us, and rebukes us with laughter. When the children of the elderly couple discover the pregnancy of their parents, they are appalled that their parents have a sex life in the first place! So is the mother of the to-be father in shock.

This is the new age rom-com with the absolute ability to spell a message loud and clear, yet hold on to the humour and romance of it. The movie is an absolute treat, with hilarious dialogues, a wonderful 80 – 90s romance, and of course fantastic story narration. All actors deserve a special mention with the bold roles they enact, their performances individually stand out and do not overshadow each other. One should definitely watch this movie to understand the fallacies of the societal norms, and that how easily they could be dodged.
