David Dhawan’s In The Mood For A ‘Serious’ Makeover
He is the uncrowned king of comedy, entertainer of the masses and one of Bollywood’s most successful film directors. After three decades of making the audiences double up with laughter, David Dhawan is ready for an image makeover. He may be in the business of making people laugh, but Dhawan is very serious about teaming up with his talented son Varun to make an offbeat film.
David Dhawan started his film career as an editor and graduated in editing from the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India. His long list of super hit films includes Shola Aur Shabnam, Bol Radha Bol, Aankhen, Raja Babu, Hero No.1, Judwaa and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. Dhawan’s legendary partnership with actor Govinda gave Bollywood some of its most entertaining comedies. Legend has it that the director often worked without a written script, and improvised with his actors to come up with hilarious scenes.
David’s talented son Varun seems to have inherited his talent for comedy and has excelled in comic capers such as Main Tera Hero, Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania, Dishoom and Badrinath ki Dulhaniya. The father-son duo even teamed up in Judwaa 2, a successful remake of David’s hit film Judwaa. Varun, however, has also shown an appetite for unusual roles and won accolades for his brooding performance in the revenge drama Badlapur. His upcoming film, October, is yet another intense love story and is a far cry from formulaic Bollywood masala films.
Varun’s brave choice of roles and appetite for risk has inspired his father to experiment with a new kind of film. So impressed was David by his son’s performance in Shoojit Sircar’s October, that he now wants to move away from masala entertainers and make a serious film with Varun. Fortune certainly favours the brave and we wish the father-son jodi all the best for their next venture.
