The epic of Mahabharata has fascinated generations of filmmakers and it has found resonance in many films like Kalyug, Thalapathi, Rajneeti and, B R Chopra’s legendary television series. After the staggering success of period films such as Baahubali, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat, Bollywood is getting ready to adapt the Mahabharata in not one but two mega-budget productions. What’s more, the two versions of the epic will be spearheaded by superstars Aamir Khan and Mohanlal respectively. Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan has reportedly set his heart on the epic drama and the franchise is likely to be presented in three to five instalments. Produced along the lines of The Lord of The Rings and Game of Thrones, Aamir Khan’s Mahabharata will have an international class and appeal. Rumour has it that the Rs 1000-crore mega project will get the financial backing of industrialist Mukesh Ambani. The actor has often referred to Mahabharata as his dream project and expressed the desire to play a crucial role in the epic. But knowing his penchant for perfection, when the project of this scale will get started is anybody’s guess.

Interestingly, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has also confirmed his own Mahabharata production Randamoozham, based on MT Vasudevan Nair’s book of the same name. What will set this film apart is that it will be narrated from Bheem’s perspective and the central role will be played by Mohanlal himself. Taking on the director’s mantle will be Srikumar Menon, while author MT Vasudevan Nair will be writing the film’s screenplay. Randamoozham is expected to have a massive budget to the tune of Rs 1000 crore and the film will be financed by Dubai-based businessman B R Shetty. The film is likely to be presented in two parts and will be shot in Malayalam, Hindi, English and multiple regional languages.
