The Funny Ladies of Bollywood

“Comedy is acting out optimism”, said the legendary Robin Williams. His statement defines the many actresses in Bollywood who excelled at comedy like none other. While the iconic Tuntun, Manorama and Guddi Maruti essentially played comediennes, many leading ladies have also shown a penchant for comedy. These 4 Bollywood heroines that have tickled our funny bone through the years:

Immortalised by the Charlie Chaplin sequence in Mr. India, the queen of hearts could pull off comedy like no other. Her impersonation of the Tramp still leaves the audience in splits and with tears of joy and sorrow. One of her many talents, comedy was on full display in the super hit Chalbaaz where she portrayed the role of the street-smart Manju with much chutzpah. This screen legend’s crackling laughter still rings in our ears.

Hema Malini

The non-stop chatter of Basanti in Sholay proved that Hema Malini was much more than just Bollywood’s Dreamgirl. Her flawless comic performance is remembered as much as Jai and Veeru’s histrionics and Gabbar Singh’s menacing presence. She displayed an exceptional flair for comedy in Seeta Aur Geeta too. Carrying the film on her shoulders she switched effortlessly between the roles of the timid Seeta and the feisty Geeta.

Juhi Chawla

The Goldie Hawn of Bollywood, Juhi Chawla lights up the screen with her effervescence and goofy charm. Her comic performances in Bol Radha Bol, Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, Yes Boss and Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani matched those of leading men like Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Rishi Kapoor. Not one to shy away from slapstick comedy, Juhi has the confidence to laugh at herself. Juhi was the undisputed queen of comedy in the 90s and has a really long list of funny performances.

Kareena Kapoor

‘Main apni favourite hoon’ is a line that sums up the joie de vivre of Kareena’s memorable character Geet in Jab We Met. The motormouth Geet makes you grin broadly and feel that the world is a good place after all. Bebo’s comic timing was also on full display in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Hulchul, Chup Chup Ke, 3 Idiots and Golmaal 3.
